Wookey Uncovered - Heritage Experience

Exclusive Tour & Tasting Experience

Discover Wookey Hole as you’ve never experienced it before. Wookey Uncovered is a premium, small‑group heritage experience designed for curious explorers, cultural enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by the deeper stories that shape extraordinary places.

This two‑hour guided tour lifts the veil on over a million years of geology, folklore, industry, and human endeavour hidden within Britain’s most iconic cave system.

Heritage - Cave

Led by expert heritage guides, your journey begins inside the oldest chambers of Wookey Hole, where the River Axe carved its subterranean path through rare Dolomitic Conglomerate over hundreds of thousands of years. Here, you’ll uncover how early visitors stored dairy in the cool, constant temperatures of the caves, and how visionary owner Gerard Hodgkinson transformed these ancient spaces into a show cave in 1927.

As the tour progresses, you’ll step into remarkable chambers rarely explored by the public, including the ornate New Grotto and Inner Grotto, discovered by early 20th‑century explorers.

Medieval folklore comes alive in the atmospheric Witch’s Kitchen, while the towering Great Hall reveals centuries of human presence etched into its towering walls. You’ll witness rare ritual protection marks in the Witch’s Chimney and stand in the birthplace of British cave diving, where pioneering explorer Penelope “Mossy” Powell made history in the 1930s.

Heritage - Papermaking

Beyond the caves, the tour extends into the historic 17th‑century Paper Mill, once the last handmade cotton paper mill in England. Here you’ll enjoy an exclusive papermaking demonstration and learn about the people and craft that shaped Wookey Hole’s industrial past.

The experience also delves into Wookey Hole’s unexpected modern heritage, including how a Victorian seaside pier found its home in the mill, the preservation of a remarkable vintage Penny Arcade, and the origins of the Wookey Hole Circus School, rooted in the Cottle family’s enduring circus legacy.

Heritage - Cave Aged Cheese

Taste Somerset’s Finest

No visit to Wookey Hole is complete without experiencing our region’s flavours. Your journey concludes with a delicious tasting of award‑winning Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar, matured in the cool, natural humidity of the caves themselves. Paired perfectly with local Somerset cider, it’s a delicious finish to your heritage adventure.

This exclusive tour is available only to small groups to ensure an immersive experience. Designed for adults and children aged 8+, this experience is ideal for those who want to go deeper - into history, into culture, and into the extraordinary story of Wookey Hole.

Spaces are limited - reserve your spot and uncover the secrets of Wookey Hole like never before.
