Wookey Hole Village Residents Celebrate Halloween with Enchanting Witch Scarecrow Trail
WOOKEY HOLE, SOMERSET – October 30, 2023
With Halloween upon us the charming village of Wookey Hole is embracing the spooky season in a unique and magical way. Local residents have come together to create an enchanting witch themed scarecrow trail which is winding through the village.
Coordinated by the Wookey Hole Residents Forum, there are 20 witchy scarecrows to be discovered around the village lanes; each handcrafted by local residents of all ages.
Jo Plimmer, of the Wookey Hole Residents Forum who have organised the event said: “the idea for the witchy scarecrow trail came from a village coffee morning in September where we asked local residents what they’d like to happen in Wookey Hole. With the village’s famous legend about a reclusive witch living in the caves, it seemed a great idea to connect with that story, and give the village an opportunity to unleash its creative Halloween spirit. We’ve been bowled over by the response, and how local businesses like Wookey Hole Caves, Wookey Hole Inn and Souldough Pizza have got behind the project by offering great prizes. We’re really hoping this becomes an annual event.”
Witchy scarecrows on display outside village homes include flying (and crash landing) witches, scary crones, re-cycled and even crocheted witches.
All scarecrows on display have been entered into a competition which will be judged on Monday 30th October by Mayor of Wells Tanys Pullin with help from the Wookey Hole Witch. The winner will receive a free family weekend break at Mendip Hot Tub Lodges in the village. Second and third prizes are a meal for two at Wookey Hole Inn and a family Souldough pizza voucher (Wookey Hole’s own pizza wizard).
The Wookey Hole Witch Scarecrow Trail will be on display until Halloween Night October 31st and everyone is welcome to come and explore. Trail maps are on the village website under featured news & things to do: www.wookeyhole.info
Visitors are encouraged to take photos and share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #WookeyHoleWitchTrail.
