Wookey Hole crowns King Kong to mark King Charles’ coronation
Wookey Hole crowns its magnificent, 25ft tall King Kong sculpture to mark the coronation of King Charles III.
Sarah Ramsey, Director and member of the Cottle Family Trust, which owns Wookey Hole, comments, “We wanted to do something extra special to celebrate the rare occasion of the coronation of a new monarch. King Kong has been an iconic feature of the Wookey Hole valley for more than 15 years, and is loved today as much as it was back then. We believe crowning him pays homage to the fun and whimsical spirit of Wookey Hole, and we encourage our guests to come enjoy a variety of family friendly fun to mark this momentous occasion!”
Bath sculptor, Alan Dunn, took on the challenge of creating the huge tribute to the King Kong movie back in 2005. He started by making a three-foot maquette and then scaling it up, working with pieces six and seven metres long. The wires were then sprayed with foam and sculpted into shape, before finally being taken to the site and welded together.
King Kong will keep his crown until Sunday 4th June and will be available for photos with the public until this point.
